“The ‘Show Me’ Disciple”

John 20:19-31

Second Sunday of Easter, April 27th, 2025

What is the message about? . . .

Missouri is nicknamed the "Show Me State" due to a speech by Congressman Willard Vandiver in 1899 (nine years after our church sanctuary was constructed), where he famously stated, "I'm from Missouri. You have to show me". This phrase is attributed to Missourians' reputation for being skeptical and demanding proof, rather than being easily swayed by mere rhetoric or claims. The Gospel scripture for this week tells the story of the disciple Thomas, who must somehow be from Missouri. It also has a message of vitality, vigor, and energy for us today. Come and hear a message of life this Sunday. You’ll also see some folks willing to “show us” their commitment to Christ in baptism. Come and see!
